Victor Hugo Pontes was born in Guimarães in 1978. He studied painting, theater, choreographic creation, and theater direction, and he works as an actor, set designer, teacher, choreographer, and theater director. As a performer, he has worked with various theater directors and choreographers, among them Nuno Carinhas, Lygia Pape, Isabel Barros, Clara Andermatt, Charlie Degotte, David Lescot, and Joana Craveiro.
Among his most recent creations as a choreographer/director, highlights include Se alguma vez precisares da minha vida, vem e toma-a (2016), Uníssono — Composição para cinco bailarinos (2016), Carnaval (2016), Nocturno, with Joana Gama (2017), Margem (2018), Drama (2019), Madrugada (2019), Os três irmãos (2020), Meio no meio (2021), Porque é infinito (2021), Corpo clandestino (2022), and Bantu (2023). He created the performance Far Away From Here for the Russian company Liquid Theatre in 2010, and he was invited to create the performance InExterior for the 8th UNICER Creative Lab.
He lectures in the Theater and Dance course at Balleteatro Escola Profissional and in the Theater course in Universidade do Minho.
In 2007, he was awarded first prize at No Ballet – 2nd International Choreography Competition in Ludwigshafen for his work Ícones. In 2013, he was nominated for the SPA Awards for Dance — Best Choreography for the performance A Ballet Story and, in 2019, he won the SPA Award in that category for the performance Margem.
