Sara Anjo

Artists

Portugal, 1982.

Sara Anjo is a dancer and choreographer interested in meditative and ecstatic practices, breathing and walking being the main ones. She is also interested in developing her work in relation to outdoors, landscapes and natural environments. She is permanently questioning what moves us: how do we move? And what are we moving towards? She graduated from the Contemporary Dance Academy (2001). She studied Artistic Studies (BA) at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (2008) and Contemporary Art (post-graduation) at the Catholic University of Portugal (2011). She holds a master's degree in Choreography from Das Graduate School in Amsterdam (2016). She has been developing a sonic theatre, exploring sound both in choreography and in the performative space. Her creations include: Ninguém Sabia Contar Aquela História ["Nobody Could Tell that Story"], in collaboration with 6 female artists (BoxNova CCB, 2011); Paisagens Líquidas ["Liquid Landscapes"], a traveling dance in an old washing house in Lisbon (Teatro do Silêncio, 2012); Em Forma de Árvore ["In the Shape of a Tree"], a solo about disquietness (Negócio ZDB, 2016); and Sacro ["Sacrum"], a magnetic walk (Negócio ZDB, 2018). In 2020, she began working on Ilhas — uma constelação ["Islands — a constellation"], a project about the insular imaginary, and in 2021 Traça ["Trace"], a project about the body's relationship with territory and ecosystem. She also works on movement notation and score writing, understanding scores as devices for reorienting attention or as a source of experiences.
