Mário Afonso studied at the António Arroio School of Visual Arts. Between 1991 and 1995, he was a scholarship holder at the Pro.Dança school and between 1995 and 1998, he completed his degree in Dance Theatre Performance at EDDC-HKA (European Dance Development Centre/Hogeschool voor de Kunsten – Arnhem) in the Netherlands.
Since 1998, he has been developing his own work for public presentation, since 1999, in Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium. In parallel with the development of his artistic creation work, Mário Afonso has participated in and conducted workshops, seminars and other events in the vast area of doing and thinking, in addition to academic studies.
In 2009, he founded the cultural association Carta Branca.
