Best known as a choreographer, and with a career of over twenty years, Tânia Carvalho has also expanded her talent into other artistic areas, such as music, drawing and cinema, both in Portugal and abroad.
In the field of choreography, Tânia Carvalho has an admirable portfolio, which includes works for companies such as Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon (Xylographie), the Company of Elders in London (I Walk, You Sing), Companhia Nacional de Bailado (S), Companhia Paulo Ribeiro (_Como é que eu vou fazer isto? _), Companhia de Ballet do Norte (3), Dançando com a Diferença dance company (Doesdicon), Ballet National de Marseille (one of four periods in time - ellipsis), among others.
Her musical projects include Madmud, Idiolecto and dubloc barulin. In 2018, she directed her first film, entitled Um Saco e uma Pedra – Uma peça de dança para ecrã [a dance piece for screen]. In 2021, she and musician and performer Matthieu Ehrlacher founded the duo Papillons d'éternité. Since then, this duo has created and performed the works Pieris Napi, Greta Oto and Lyropteryx Appollonia.
Tânia Carvalho won the award Jovens Criadores in 2000 for her dance piece Inicialmente Previsto (1999) and twice the Best Choreography Award from Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores for Icosahedron (2012) and Onironauta (2021). As part of the Saison Croisée France-Portugal 2022, Théâtre de la Ville, in Paris, dedicated a special program to Tânia Carvalho's work, presenting several of her pieces throughout the year.
In 2019, her merit as an artist was formally recognized by the City Council of Viana do Castelo (Portugal) and, in 2023, she was decorated by the French Ministry of Culture with the insignia "Chevalier de L'ordre des Arts et des Lettres", in recognition of her contribution to cultural enrichment in the country.
