Coreographer & LA VERONAL Director
Having carried out his studies between Barcelona and New York, Marcos Morau studied photography, movement and theater. Creator of imaginary worlds and landscapes where movement and image meet and contaminate each other, his artistic knowledge is not limited to dance, but extends to other disciplines such as photography and dramaturgy. Having obtained the highest grade in his final graduation project and an important creative award at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, he completed a Master in Drama Theory (from UAB, Universidad Pompeu Fabra and the Institut del Teatre).
For more than ten years he has directed the company La Veronal. In this context, he is director, choreographer, set designer, costume designer, and light designer. He has traveled extensively around the world to present his pieces in festivals, theaters, and other international contexts, such as the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the Biennale di Venezia, the Festival d'Avignon, Tanz Im August in Berlin, the RomaEuropa Festival, the SIDance Festival in Seoul, or the Sadler's Wells Theater in London, among many others.
Besides his work with La Veronal, Marcos Morau has been invited by various companies and theaters to develop new productions, which combine performing arts and dance, with a special focus on dramaturgy. Having been the youngest winner of the Premio Nacional de Danza (Spain), his language is a legacy of abstract movement and physical theater, mixed in a surrealistic and somber emulsion. A powerful body language based on the annihilation of any organic logic, dissecting movement and transforming it into a unique identity.
Among the many gestures of recognition, the choreographer won the FAD Sebastià Gasch award, from the FAD Foundation for Arts and Design, and the TimeOut award for best creator.
Marcos Morau combines the development of his works with teaching, giving classes and workshops about creative processes and new dramaturgies in conservatories, cycles and universities, such as the Institut del Teatre, in Barcelona, the Arts University of Strasbourg, or the Sorbonne Nouvelle, in Paris.
In Morau's future is the development of new formats and the contact with other languages, where opera, dance and physical theater dialogue more than ever, seeking new forms of expression and communication in our present, always convulsive and changing.
His work is supported by major international theaters and festivals, such as the Avignon Festival, Sadler's Wells, Roma Europa, Tanz imAugust, among many others. He has been guest choreographer for many international renowned companies: NDT, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Göteborgs Operans Danskompani, and others. He has also worked for the Scapino Ballet, in Rotterdam.
His latest works with La Veronal - Opening Night (2021), _Sonoma _(2020) and Pasionaria (2018) - reflect today's human beings facing their fears, questioning the world and their destiny. In EVC's 2022 season, Marcos Morau integrated the program Territory V with a re-staging/resetting of his creation Valse.
