Benvindo Fonseca studied at the National Conservatory of Lisbon and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's school, and continued his training in New York, London and Paris.
Having been a soloist at Companhia de Dança de Lisboa and the Gulbenkian Ballet - where he was principal dancer - he has worked with great artists such as Mats Ek, Jiří Kylián, Hans Van Manen, Ohad Naharin, Itzik Galili, Vasco Wellenkamp, Olga Roriz, Paul Taylor, Christopher Bruce and Nacho Duato, among others. He co-founded the company and was Artistic Director / Choreographer of Ballet Contemporâneo de Lisboa.
As a choreographer, he has created works for D. Maria II National theatre, Teatro O Bando, Teatro Experimental do Porto, Gulbenkian Ballet, Companhia de Bailado Contemporâneo, Almada and Évora dance companies, National Conservatory, Escola Superior de Dança (ESD), Academia de Bailado Clássico Pirmin Treku, Stadttheater Hildesheim (Germany), the Berlin Opera House, and Compañía Úrsula López (Spain).
His multifaceted career includes the dance solo _Arabian Dance, with the Tchaikovsky's piece played by Maria João Pires, the pas de deux for the song Povo que Lavas no Rio, live, in the presence of the fado singer Amália Rodrigues, and the choreography of the ballet Dawn of an Announced End, with Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 played live by the Symphony Orchestra of the Musiktheater im Revier (Gelsenkirchen, Germany).
His choreographic works have been performed in Spain, Italy, Germany, the USA, Cuba, Brazil, Greece, Poland, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
A multi-award winner, this extraordinary dancer has won the "Youth in Creativity" award from the UN, the Career Award from Primo Canto - Associação Cultural, as well as prizes from Oeiras City Council and RDP África national radio station, among many others. He was given a tribute at the Gala de Estrellas in Dominican Republic and took part in the II Dance N'Arts Winter Course in 2017 as a guest teacher.
