Artists

Coimbra, Portugal, 1986.

Alice Joana Gonçalves is a performance and visual artist who works on the inclusion of the human being in the environment/landscape, executing slow-motion performance works that involve philosophical research of the human essence. Her work interrogates what makes us fragile and vulnerable – art is the vehicle that allows the artist to give form to these elements. Her first work was Apocalipse (2012), with which she won the Portuguese Performance Award. The following year, she collaborated with Julião Sarmento in the conception of Five Easy Pieces and Notre Dame. In 2014, she won the Portuguese Performance Award again (this time with The Hunting) and was invited by the Arte Institute (NY) to interpret her performance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. In 2015, she won the New Awards for Visual Art Emerging Artists, and performed_ La Chienne_ in the exhibition of Julião Sarmento’s private collection, along with works by Gerhard Richter, Bruce Nauman, Nan Goldin, and Marina Abramovic. Later, she presented her new creation entitled The Foxes (2018) at Palácio do Sobralinho, Teatro Ibérico, and the Malta Festival in Poznań. In 2019, Alice Joana Gonçalves conceived Temporary Palace, in collaboration with Daddy G (Massive Attack), which premiered at MAAT Museum. More recently, she created Apocalipse 2020 – a piece born from the recent lockdown period. Having been featured in magazines such as Arte Fórum and Vogue, her work has also been presented on TV – both in the RTP2 program Container 13 and in the documentary Queen of the Horses which aired on RTP.
