About KAASH, by Akram Khan

World premiere: 28 March 2002, Maison des Arts, Créteil (France)
Akram Khan teamed up with visual artist Anish Kapoor and composer Nitin Sawhney to explore aspects of the Hindu God Shiva, his cosmic violence, his meditative nature, and the eternal cycle of creation and destruction he initiates. They created Kaash, which in Hindi means ‘if only’, drawing on a fluid and powerful dialogue between the worlds of contemporary dance and the Indian classical dance form kathak. They created multiple universes from infinite possibilities, between black holes and Indian time cycles, theoretical physics and Hindu mythology.

About BETWEEN OUTSIDE AND ME, by Jermaine Spivey

BETWEEN OUTSIDE AND ME is a piece that requires these young dancers to push beyond their comfort zones mentally and physically. Each one of them is responsible for completing multiple tasks unrelentlessly. They must see each other and respond to each other, breathe together, be in the rhythm of not just the music and the counts, but also of their collective action. The choreography requires precision and accuracy, and that accuracy is intentionally put into conflict because of the tempo being either uncomfortably fast or slow.

I have tried my best to create a work for them that is always just outside of what they are comfortable with, because I believe this is an important skill to practice in order to become an excellent professional dancer and artist.
