Beatriz Valentim in a creative residency at the EVC with the project “Asymmetrical”.

“Asymmetrical” is a dance piece in the form of a duet, inspired by the choreography and performances of David Byrne. Conceived as a continuous game — or a series of games — centered on concepts such as rhythm, space, and movement, the dialogue between dance and music constantly shifts, expands, and deconstructs itself amid various possibilities of expression. Music plays a dominant role over the bodies, with the dancers possessed by its power, seeking various ways to hear and reproduce it, completely detached from reality, immersed in their individuality. At its core, the work is aimed primarily at teenagers — both as a source of inspiration and as its core audience — engaging directly with their experiences, perspectives, and collective energy.

The project explores the porous boundaries between music and dance, composition and performance, sound and movement. By focusing on the importance of the group, “Assimétrico” challenges conventional notions of pairs and binary structures, proposing instead a space where the collective gains strength.

Performed by Beatriz Valentim and Miguel Santos.
