Sónia Baptista has a degree in Contemporary Dance from Forum Dança. She earned a Master of Research degree in Choreography and Performance with distinction from the University of Roehampton in London. Additionally, she participated in various dance, music, theater and video workshops.
In her work, she explores and experiments with the languages of dance, music, literature, theater, and video. In 2001, she was awarded the Ribeiro da Fonte Revelation Prize in Dance for Haikus, her first piece. Among her works that followed, she highlights Icebox Fly. Winter Kick (2003), Subwoofer(2006), Vice-Royale.Vain-Royale.Vile-Royale (2009), Peaufine (2011), Tempus Fugit (2012), Today is it a squirrel? (2013), in the fall the fox, e na queda raposar (2014), Assentar sobre a Subida das Águas (2016), Querer do Corpo, Peso and Triste In English From Spanish (2017), I Call Her Will and Sozinhar (2019). More recently, she co-staged the opera TNSoMDN (2019); co-created Mise en Âbime and Could Be Worse (2019); initiated the Planeta Dança project with CNB (2020); and premiered The Anger! The Fury! (2020), WOW and RE: (2022), both co-created with Aldara Bizarro, SWEAT SWEAT SWEAT (2023), and DYKEs ON ICE (2024).
She writes dramaturgical texts for other creators and she choreographs for cinema, video, and theater. She has published eight books.
She is an associate artist of AADK Portugal.
