João Sanchez, 27, was born in Lisbon and grew up in Arruda dos Vinhos. He is a graduate in cinema from the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (ESTC) and a freelancer in the audiovisual field. At 17, he premiered his first film, _Pecado, at Cinemateca Portuguesa. At 18, he created the collective Colectivo Pagárrenda and premiered Nós os Arroianos, his first feature film, in the same theater. Since then, he has directed A maneira certa de encontrar casa, the most-watched film with the corresponding most-read article in the Portuguese newspaper Público in 2018. He has directed, edited, and developed several projects in collaboration with big brands, small musicians, and both big and small companies. In 2021, he served on the jury of the Avanca Film Festival, created the clothing brand Bon Vivant, and both created and performed in Uma Água Por Favor with Maria Abrantes. In 2022, he collaborated with Sublime Dance Company on the creation of the interactive videodance Step Fall & Rise and the documentary Kutxi Kutxi Kutxi. In 2023, with Maria Abrantes and Sofia Kafol, he created the videodance Finimondo, for which he was awarded the Best Portuguese Director prize at the InShadow Festival. Rebento, his most recent film, premiered at Millennium Festival ao Largo ’24. He is still learning to write in third person.
