Born in 1995, Hugo M. Moreira began his musical studies in 2001 at the Conservatory — Professional School of Arts of Madeira (CEPAM), where he studied violin with Elena Kononenko and piano with Irina Kózina.
In 2012, he enrolled in the Materials Engineering course at the University of Minho, completing his degree in 2015.
In 2021, he enrolled in the composition course at the Higher School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE), where he studied composition with Pedro Santos, Dimitris Andrikopoulos and Daniel Moreira, completing his degree in 2024.
As a composer, Moreira has had several of his works premiered, namely ‘Air’ (2022), for alto flute and guitar; “Momotarō” (2023), for ensemble; and ‘The Song of Iroha’ (2024), for soprano and ensemble.
In parallel with composition, Moreira has been studying musical direction with Jan Wierzba since 2023. As a conductor, he has been involved in the premiere of works by several of his fellow composers, namely Aarón Esteve, Rodrigo Pinto, Alfredo Rafael and Guilherme Costa.
Moreira is currently pursuing a master's degree in composition at ESMAE, studying with Carlos Azevedo. The topic of his dissertation focuses on contemporary opera as a laboratory for artistic interdisciplinarity.
