Flávio Rodrigues

Artists

Vila Nova de Gaia, 1984

Flávio Rodrigues started dancing and drawing in 1992, under teacher and artist Alexandrina Costa. He trained at Ginasiano (1996), Dance Works Rotterdam (2005) and at Núcleo de Experimentação Coreográfica (2008), and he completed his degree in Contemporary Dance from Balleteatro Escola Profissional in 2022. He also attended the Intervention and Site-specific Art Creation course at Universidade Lusófona (2009) and the DJ course at Escola Bimotor (2015). Since 2006, he has developed his own artistic projects, which are multidisciplinary, experimental, process-based, and autobiographical in nature. Drawing, performance art, sound, movement and sculpture are the main media he relies on for his work. As a performer, he builds and composes intuitive devices, using materials, sonorities, images and objects that are mostly taken from spontaneous encounters, reused, or obtained in processes of collecting and assembling. Walking and drifting have emerged as fruitful processes. His projects have been developed, presented and exhibited in various places and in partnership with various structures, such as Teatro Municipal Rivoli (Porto), Arte Total (Braga), Ilka Studios (Hannover), 4BidGallery (Amsterdam), Rua das Gaivotas 6 (Lisbon), Faculdade de Bellas Artes U.C.M./Acción Spring(t) (Madrid), Lake Studios (Berlin), Centro de Experimentação Artística CEIA (Moita), Festival Mandala (Wrocław), Territori Festival (Ibiza), and Correios em Movimento/Dança em Trânsito (Rio de Janeiro). Besides the development of his own creations and research, he has collaborated as a costume designer, musician, set designer, performer (between 2006 and 2017) and rehearsal assistant with different artists and companies. As an associate artist of Balleteatro, he develops creation and training projects at its professional school, besides co-curating the Corpo+Cidade (since 2014) and Extemporânea (since 2023) programs.
