Cátia Esteves

Artists

Porto, 1978

Cátia Esteves began her studies in dance at a school where she had her first experiences of body, movement, stage and artistic communication: Ginasiano Escola de Dança. She lived, she discovered, she traveled, she developed, and she held on to everything that these formative years had to offer her. It made her keep on pursuing more: more workshops both in and outside the country, more work with independent choreographers, until she joined Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte, where she danced for several years. Her first experiences with choreography came with the creation of NEC — Núcleo de Experimentação Coreográfica. Here she met and collaborated with Joclécio Azevedo and other emerging artists. Along the way, she also pursued social science, completing a degree in Economics and, later, a master’s degree in Dance Teaching (ESD). Society and her relationship with others led her towards teaching: she taught for more than 15 years in many schools offering integrated dance education programs (Lugar Presente, Ginasiano Escola de Dança, AMVP, among others). She also taugh in higher education (at Escola Superior de Dança, in undergraduate and master’s programs; and at UTAD, in the Theatre and Performing Arts undergraduate program). Throughout, she has actively maintained a professional connection to dance, working as a movement assistant with Nuno Cardoso (Ao Cabo Teatro), with Orquestra do Norte and with Companhia Instável, and collaborating with national and international choreographers, Gregory Maqoma, Willi Dorner and Roberto Olivan. Her most recent work is alongside Victor Hugo Pontes (Nome Próprio), as assistant art director on the choreographic piece BANTU. Additionally, she works as a trainer and teacher in professional institutions (Nome Próprio, Companhia Paulo Ribeiro, among others).
